It's your breath!
In Psalm 139 we read, “My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place ….. when I was woven together ….. Your eyes saw my unformed body.” What attention that is at the highest level, God was watching me as I was formed! And it’s then God puts His breath into us, to give life. I was reminded of this when in our worship service we sang, “It’s Your breath in our lungs ….. You give life.” So I got to thinking about the life-giving breath that we have.
The other morning, quite early on, I stood at the door and looked out on an autumn scene of changing colours in the trees and bushes and felt a bit of a nip in the air, and as I looked around I breathed out and saw my breath. It then came home to me that my breath was God given, I didn’t work at it or organise it, I just breathed. That cloud of mist from my nose and mouth was a gift from God.
In the Hebrew language it is written, Ruach Elohim; Ruach means Spirit or breath and Elohim means God, so Ruach Elohim means “the Spirit of God” or, “the Breath of God” and refers to God’s power and life-giving force.
We have that God-given breath in our lungs which enables us to live every day. The question is, “am I living every day for God?” We also believe that the bible is God-breathed, in other words, His Spirit and breath runs through every page and is the guide-book for our lives.
As the days of autumn move along and the air gets colder, we will then see much more of our breath as we are out and about, let that be a reminder to us that God the Creator is sustaining us each and every day. After all it’s “His breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise, we pour out our praise, to You only.”
