With You!
A riddle for you: “Each morning I appear to lie at your feet. All day long I will follow, no
matter how fast you run. Yet I nearly perish in the midday sun. What am I? Partly because
of the picture above and you working it out for yourself, the answer is, your shadow!
The other day in the early evening, as the day cooled a bit from the heat of the day, I took a ride on my bike, just a short trip around some of the lanes near home. Then a strange thing happened.
The sky was a beautiful blue without any cloud, and I was cycling along a lane bordered by a fairly thick hedgerow, towards the sun. On my cycle I have a little rear view mirror just to make me aware of what’s around, so every now and then I would glance at it.
Well, I have to say, I was just enjoying the evening breeze and minding my own business
when I was conscious that, out of the corner of my eye, I could see another cyclist just
behind me. The thing is, he seemed to be wearing a black outfit and riding a black bike. So I waited for him to pass me, but he didn’t, yet I could still see him out of the corner of my eye! Checking my mirror, I couldn’t see him behind me so I thought again that he was just about to pass me, but he didn’t! Right, I thought, I’ve had enough of this so I turned my head around to have words with my fellow cyclist. It was then that all was revealed; because of the direction of the sun and it being lower in the sky, it was my very own shadow of me and my bike against the fairly high hedgerow. So with the angles the shadow was just slightly behind me and, of course, as I was slowing down and speeding up, so was my shadow. I don’t need to be told, but I did feel a bit of a numpty!
But then it’s funny what goes through your mind and I was reassured that like my own
shadow, Jesus is always beside me.
In Proverbs 18:24 it talks about, “……. there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
That friend is Jesus Christ and He wants to be beside you and stick with you through every day of your life. Not just for our lifetime, but, for ever!
