Rev Alan Davies Press Release

Wymondham Baptist Church appoints new minister

Wymondham, Norfolk

27 December 2009

Wymondham Baptist Church will soon be opening  a new chapter in its history of more than 200 years, by appointing a new minister on 9 January 2010.

Friends of the church are invited to attend the minister’s formal induction into the role at Wymondham Baptist at a service on Saturday 9 January, at 3:00 p.m. The induction will include a time of worship and preaching. The Reverend Alan Stroulger, who recently retired from leading the Baptist Church at Carlton Road (and who was at college with Alan), will be preaching.  Richard Lewis of the Eastern Baptist Association will be conducting the service, and refreshments will follow.

The church body voted unanimously to invite Alan to join them as their official minister after a two-year period of running its outreach from within its own members’ talents and enthusiasms. During this time the church remained focussed on bringing in the right person, and Alan, who began full-time ministry in 1982, will be a natural fit within the community-focussed church. His rich experience of working with people includes being a fully qualified counsellor, as well as time in the RAF, working for the MOD, and representing the Home Office in the UK and abroad.

Alan’s wife, Janice, who is also a trained counsellor, plays an important part in his ministry and has been a support to him in the churches he has served recently. She has also encouraged him in the work he does with the church in Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Alan and Janice have already set up home in Wymondham as they settle into their role.

Nigel Hannant, one of the team of deacons which has been running administrative affairs for the church, commented that ‘Alan and Janice already fit in as one of us, really fitting in with where we are in our journey, and where they are in their own lives.  We’re excited about how Alan’s wisdom and insight will enhance all our own talents, and how he will lead and support by working alongside us.’

Alan echoed Nigel’s enthusiasm, commenting that he and Janice felt certain Wymondham is where God has called them to, and that they are eager to support and to grow its existing ministries.

 ALAN DAVIES BIOGRAPHY

Alan was born in Plymouth and that is where he spent most of his childhood years. The big change came for him when he joined the RAF in 1952 and it was in the service that he first came to Norfolk working at a radiosonde station just outside Ormesby. It wasn’t a bad posting as there was no RAF camp near the village and he had to live in the local pub – run at that time, if he remembers correctly by “Jumbo” Edwards.

Coming out of the RAF Alan joined what was then the Admiralty as an Assistant Armament Supply Officer and over the next 20 years or so he filled various posts in the UK and Singapore. For three of those years he was seconded to the Civil Service College, first at Sunningdale and then in Edinburgh. It may well be that some of our readers passed through his hands as he tried to teach them the rudiments of mathematics and statistics up in the far north.

By 1974 Alan had become a Christian and was finding some clash of conscience between his beliefs and his work. As a result he sought release from what had become the MoD and was posted to the Home Office as part of the team that would run the 1975 referendum. After that he stayed in the Home Office working in London and at the Fire College at Moreton in the Marsh. It was in 1982 that he finally accepted what he had felt for some time, that God wanted him in full time Ministry and so he resigned from the Civil Service and went to Regents Park College, Oxford to study theology. Since then he has served as minister at Shinfield in Berkshire and in Westcliff on Sea, Essex. Alan formally retired a few years ago when his then wife began showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease from which she since died, but he carried on serving the church in different roles in Suffolk and East Anglia generally.

This year has been quite a full year for him as he has married Janice in September , and now he has accepted the calling to Wymondham BC. Both he and Janice are counsellors and their vision is show God’s love to the whole community,  demonstrating His active compassion to all in need; and, as he says, that’s most of us.

Alan’s interests, when he is not working, are bowls, bridge and Probus. He hopes to take at least some of those up when he gets settled.
