February 28th, 2008 by Helen

A place for people with any suggestions for a name for Junior Church and any groups names. Would especially welcome thoughts and comments from our younger people.

Explode for the whole sunday school….. Richard and Helen had some good ones for within that group

  2. Richard

We thought of (under the general heading of Explode):

    Ignite
    Dynamite
    Fuse
    Sparks
    TNT
    Nitro

Couldn’t categorise them into age groups - that’s up to you!

  3. Tammy

I love those names - they just say “energy” to me!! Very dynamic and fun too! I love the idea of the worship leader being able to say “the young people are now going to EXPLODE”, and I think the YP would also enjoy the joke LOL!!

  4. Nigel

    Highly Flammable
    Volatile
    Fizzle
    :)

Sorry could not resist that! ;)

Seriously, I think the ‘Explode’ brand is great and the sensible sub names are brilliant!

Love the ‘Kids are now to going to ‘Explode’ ‘:)

  5. Jill M

Great ideas - lots of space for when we grow too!
If we have a Youth service it could be ‘The Big Bang’ :)

Oh, and whoever said the ticking bomb on the screen - excellent!!

  6. Richard

I think the “ticking bomb” on the screen was Helens idea.

Might need a tech-head to figure that one out though.

    NIIIGEEEELLL!!

  7. heather

loving the ‘explode’ name - it could give a whole new dimension to this year’s church bonfire… Chris?

liking the idea of little sparks for the creche :)
    (sparkles/sparkies…)
or for the toddlers if the creche is to remain nameless…

  8. jimmyd

The ticking bomb on the screen I can do (using flash) but it would be a distraction during the worship to have in on the screen.

The youth service used to have a nuclear explosion attached it it’s name and as a logo. Escapde’s logo was also an exploding sign.

Has anyone asked the kids/youth what they want to be called?

Can I suggest we get the young people to name their groups? Let’s show them the teaching material and ask for suggestions. It would give them greater ownership as well as letting them be part of the process. For the youngest group it would be more suitable to let them have a choice of names perhaps.

  10. Helen

The point of having a blog about the names is that we have some suggestions to put to the youth so they can choose their name - it is quite a lot to expect a 5 year old to think of an appropriate name without giving them some examples.

I intend to put the suggestions to the youth quite soon so hurry up with the suggestions - comments from the young people equally as welcome!! By the time we start the new material after Easter they will have made their decisions about the names.

Once we have done this we can then worry about the visuals such as the bomb!

A suggestion for the theme for the names is to name them after amazing things God has made; there are some amazing this in space like Supernova’s and Nebula’s etc…. this would also give lots of easy suggestions to give to the younger groups as Rob suggested.

I worry about the phrase “now the kids are going out to explode” becomming cheesy and old quite quickly - it’s fun now but things like this can quickly become tired.

  12. Richard

    I like the word Supernova.

  13. Bethan

I liked nitro as a group name :) and i think it is important for the kids to be involved I remember when ‘zone’ was created and i hated the name!

    Vitalize
    Filament
    Atom
    Venture

  14. Tammy

Just in response to jimmyd’s concern about the “going to explode” catchphrase becoming out dated … I think this could be true of any potential catchphrase and/or group names, and if that were the case, then what is there to stop us from re-naming everything over again to keep things fresh? They’re only names after all! I don’t think that should stop us from calling the groups whatever we want (or in this case, whatever the YP want!) for now.

Also, as the mother of 3 under 9s, I don’t think they would think it’s cheesy, I think they’d think it’s absolutely fantastic! They love that kind of thing and it’s very easy for them to remember and therefore feel engaged with! Don’t forget, what might seem cheesy and naff to us adults is absolutely wonderful when you’re only 6 ;).

  15. jimmyd

We do have to remember that this spans the ages as low as creche (0 or 1) all the up to 16 so any catch phrase won’t have the same appeal to all ages; personally I think it’s something to avoid but at the end of the day it’s the youth/kids that have to accept something and I’m willing to accept it if it’s what they want.

It’s not us as adults that need to feel ownership it’s them and if they are happy with a name or phrase then brilliant but a 6 year old and a 15 year old have very different tastes.

  16. Helen

At the moment the oldest child we have is 11 since the older youth have a separate group altogether. The intention is that once the children reach 14 they move to the new group - who have yet to choose a name for themselves either.

I like the idea of a “Space” theme - any more suggestions for an overall group name and sub-names that we can suggest to the children?

  17. Nigel

Ok, here we go, my ideas:

Theme: ‘On-line’ (both online and on-line with God)
    Groups:
    - Bloggers
    - Surfers
    - Network
    - Wireless
    - Peer-to-peer
    - Ether
    - Cat5
    - Cyber
    - Connect
    - @
    - .Com (.Net, .Org)

I think you get the idea.

    More to come, Nigel

  18. Nigel

    Theme: ‘Gadgets’

    Groups:
    - Remote
    - PDA
    - Mobile
    - 3G
    - Digital
    - Etc

    Weak, but another idea :)

    Nigel

  19. Nigel

    Theme: ‘Capacity’

    Groups:

    - Bits
    - Bytes
    - Kilobytes
    - Megabytes
    - Gigabytes
    - That would make the oldest group ‘Terrabytes’ LOL :D
    Err…I think I should stop now…

    :) Nigel

  20. Richard

    LEAVE IT!

  21. Richard

That wasn’t a suggestion for a group name. That was a message for Nigel.

    ;-)

  22. Jill M

Really liking the idea of Network as a name ….. and the associated words BUT take the point that what appeals to us, may not be what appeals to the YP. I hope they have as much fun thinking about names as we seem to be having :D

Been reading the blog with interest from afar! Just gonna drop some thoughts in:

@jimmyd (11): Tammy’s right that *any* catchphrase has the potential to date. As long as people are aware it may happen, that’s fine.

@Bethan (13): Your comment on “Zone” hits the nail on the head quite aptly, and backs up bigrob (9). It really needs to be talked about with the young people so their thoughts can be taken into account.

@jimmyd (15): You’re never gonna get a “catch-all” title that appeals to everyone, sadly. Consultation is the best to hope for.

Generally, the best thing in my opinion is to speak to the various groups and see if there are any names that really fire them up, or any names that really disenfranchise them. Then you can begin thinking about making decisions as to names.

  24. bigrob

The name ‘LEAVE IT’ has a certain ring to it - well done Ric although I also agree that Nigel does need to ‘LEAVE IT’. lol

  25. Thorpey

“The youth are now going to LEAVE IT”… a statement about many churches in the UK. :(
